What are Postal Towns, or "Outward Codes"?

Postal Towns Illustration

Postal Towns

Postal towns correspond to specific regions, or a large town/built up area (BUA) that help streamline the postal service in the UK.

For example, Carlisle is a postal town, and all addresses within this town will have a Carlisle identifier in the postcode - in this case "CA".

This helps sorting offices filter mail quickly and easily, making identification of region and delivery addresses far quicker than the address alone.

Postcode Areas

Postcode areas, on the other hand, are the broader geographical divisions within the UK postal system.

These are represented by the first one or two letters of a postcode, known as the postcode area. For instance, "ST" is the postcode area for Stoke-on-Trent, which includes Stafford as well (this catches people out regularly!) These areas cover large regions, sometimes encompassing multiple postal towns.

Outcodes

"Outcodes" or outward codes refer to the first part of a postcode, before the space.

For example, in the postcode "ST16 3EW", the outcode is "ST16". This part of the postcode pinpoints a specific area within the larger postcode area, helping to narrow down the location to a more precise part of the postal town.

Outcodes are crucial for sorting and directing mail accurately and efficiently, as they break down regions into manageable sections.
