Whitby Abbey

During the two hundred years or so since Capability Brown laid out the parkland and Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet, started the building of Sledmere, the house has become filled with works of art reflecting very different tastes and life styles of the succedding generations of the Sykes family.Such as the Turkish room, designed for Sir Mark, an astonishing room to find in a country house; the magnificent plasterwork decoration, never bettered by its creator Joseph Rose, commissioned by Sir Christopher; the Horse Room with its evidence of the old Sir Tatton's passion and achievements, and, the splendid pipe organ bought by Sir Richard from Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire, which fills the house with music for the visitor.
