Over recent years the road surface as expected due to heavy use of large vehicles, especially the local quarry vehicles it has deteriorated. The road surface as marked in the attached photographs has in fact developed subsidence to the extent that the it had developed a large and long sloping depression in the road surface. The tarmac surface has failed and cracked. The road surface is starting to sink lower and lower against the kerbside. This is causing the likes of the heavy good vehicles carry loads, such as the quarry lorries to bounce, and in turn the loads they carry inclusive of any empty containers to “bounce”, and “bang down” onto the lorry bed. The noise emitted is “very loud” and not only annoying but worrying for me as it also vibrates my home. This is also causing during heavy periods of rain for water to pool several inches in depth, when passing vehicles drive through the pooled water, it throws a large amount of water, over the public footpath and over my hedge, so well over 6 foot into the front garden. I imagine this pooled water could also potentially cause an accident. To note, in past years when raising previous issues affecting this stretch of road, which were finally resolved, the visiting Highways Inspector / Engineer verbally highlighted to me that the whole stretch of the road that includes the subsidence area is in need of being fully resurfaced. Please can you look to fix and resolve ASAP

A whole string of potholes, some very deep, from no 9 to no 19. They are along the middle of the road and along the side by the houses. There were cars parked along the recreation ground side of the road so I couldn’t see if there were potholes along that side too. With so many deep potholes it is near impossible to avoid them. Cars will be damaged. Cyclists and motorcyclists are likely to be dismounted. These need urgent repair to prevent damage and accidents.

The electronic sign displaying a vehicle’s speed is no longer reliable. It is very slow in responding to an approaching vehicle and you can be going past it by the time it eventually shows the speed. This has been happening for about a month. It sometimes displays inaccurate speeds too - eg 6mph when you’re doing 25mph. It might just need cleaning or the sensor repositioning

Tempsford Road, between BSG Property Services and the junction with Sandy Road, 20th January

The road was resurfaced a few months ago (I believe August or September) but the surface is far worse now than it was before it was resurfaced. It was resurfaced with loose chippings, which unsurprisingly given the steep slope have almost entirely run off the road leaving a surface that is an awful mixture of patches of rough chippings interspersed on the tarmac. The surface has already started breaking up in several locations, especially in the middle of the road. I assume you are aware of the problems as a temporary 20mph limit sign is up for the skid risk, but there will be no improvement in that risk as long as the surface remains as it is, so the signs will need to stay in place unless it is resurfaced properly. Will it be resurfaced rather than just bodged with loose chippings? And if so, when? The surface is genuinely dangerous as it stands given the lack of grip when going downhill, especially for cyclists, so if it is not resurfaced there is the distinct chance of someone incurring serious injury or worse due to the lack of grip and holes already appearing. I'd also be interested to understand why loose chippings was chosen for the road in the first place, given the obvious issues with it on such a steep slope. The contrast with the Tempsford end of the same road is stark, as that was resurfaced at a similar time to a much higher standard and the road surface is now much smoother and safer. It also contrasts with the recently resurfaced Brickhill Road in Sandy, which again now has a very smooth sealed surface. I find it odd that a higher standard of surface was provided for that road when it is a quiet residential cul-de-sac, compared to Tempsford road which is a much busier through road.

Many potholes along Mill Lane that need investigation after a child came off her bike and a horse slipped into a hole. This is access to a couple of property, deepdale and a farm. Numerous cars and off road motorbikes use the road (which has been resurfaced by Central Beds in the past) and it is proven very unsafe, very dangerous, damaging cars and someone or something will get seriously hurt.

Having just cycled down this today, 11 December 2023 I was appalled to see that the road surface is a danger to any two wheeled vehicle. I was forced to ride in the area that cars had cleared with their tyres as the loose chippings are threat to stability. When vehicles pass they have to drive across the loose chippings which are then scattered in all directions including the area I'm cycling along. Again the issue of stability arises due to the fact that the road is not straight and you have to manoeuvre around a couple of bends which increases the likely hood of the front wheel "washing out". I would suggest that the road be swept at the earliest opportunity. I note the an engineer has already been and felt no further action was required, maybe get him to descend on a bicycle with passing vehicles and I'm sure his opinion would change. It's a clear danger to life and limb.
