Repeatedly Blocked Drain Gullies + Severe Flooding of Main Road, 12th January
The following drain gullies are regularly and severely blocked: Drain gullies along Battle Road, especially those by Essex Street, which cause significant flooding of the main road in heavy rain, endangering road users.
Photos available on request.
Observations were made during heavy rain on 3-5 occasions between June 2023 and Jan 2024. These Drain gullies have been repeatedly blocked, with consistently little to no flow (water typically running over them, rather than down them in heavy rain).
The two main impacts of this are: 1) Overloading the drains at the intersection of Charles Street / Essex Street, causing further flood damage to Falkland House / in Falkland Garth. 2) Severe flooding and surface water across Essex Street at the end of Battle Road, causing a risk to traffic on a high volume route.
Fortunately, regular street sweeping has helped to prevent this from turning into a more severe problem that it already is - many thanks for that.
Please let me know if I can report these observations in a more helpful format in future - e.g. if I can refer to specific asset IDs in a spreadsheet, or if it would be helpful for me to use whatever classification the council uses internally to prioritise works.
If possible, I would appreciate understanding what the plan of action is. It seems that a deep service and testing of the gullies is the minimum required, although from speaking with contractors I understand that several gullies may need replacing with more robust designs which are easier to maintain.
