Turds/sewage in the Thames at Iffley Lock, 8th May

Wed, 08 May 2024 13:39:27 +0100
51.730709 -1.230969

Thames water is still discharging untreated sewage into the Thames. Turds were clearly visible at Iffley Lock today. This is a stretch of the river used by college rowing teams, canoeists, dog walkers and on occasions wild swimmers. There was a clearly a Public Health problem. As far as I can gather, this is a stretch of the river that is not routinely monitored or tested by Thames Water or The Environment Agency and there is no way to report this online to the Environment Agency. Surely the Council, with its public health responsibilities, should investigate as this is clearly putting public health of river users, riverside boat dwellers (and wildlife/fish) at risk. This is not a good advert either given the popularity of this riverside location for residents and tourists including international visitors to our city.,

Blocked footpaths due to overgrown bushes and potholes, 8th May

Wed, 08 May 2024 13:29:42 +0100
51.730709 -1.230969

1. Footpaths haven’t been maintained and are becoming impassible, especially for those with baby buggies/prams, mobility aids/sticks and for dog walkers. One photo shows the footpath into Tree Lane (bottom end, Iffley village). This is a well used junction and forces pedestrians into to road. Similar problems are found at the top of Tree Lane too. Another photo shows West View, where I live (off Tree lane), where a walker with a large pram was struggling past the foliage. 2. Potholes on lower Tree Lane (Iffley village end) and Meadow lane (towards Donnington playing field) are hazardous. In the last 2-3 days I have seen two elderly people on mobility scooters narrowly avoid coming off. One was in meadow lane (she didn’t see the holes in the poor light) and the other in Tree Lane (he has similar problems). This is not safe. I’ve also seen cyclists almost losing control on the same potholes - see photo of lower Tree Lane.

While it is clearly frequently trimmed it nonetheless obtrudes over the narrow pavement a distance of at least 18 inches at head / shoulder height making it necessary to stoop right down to avoid being scratched. Please could the property owner be required to constrain the hedge to within their curtilage to a height of at least 2 metres.

Council litter bin inexplicably removed, 7th May

Tue, 07 May 2024 18:21:23 +0100
51.730073 -1.240569

A well used litter bin at this location was removed a month or two ago with no warning or explanation. It’s actually a super important litter bin site as many people walk past it on riverside walks and there are no bins S until Sandford Lock over two miles away and none N until the far side of Donnington Bridge. It urgently needs replacement to keep plastic bottles etc out of the River Thames.
