The cycle lane on Eynsham Road is in such poor condition that it is barely rideable, 1st May

Wed, 01 May 2024 08:33:59 +0100
51.750328 -1.303143

I have previously reported the dreadful state of the cycle lane on Eynsham Road, especially where it meets Cumnor Hill. I see that the worst potholes have now been reported as fixed. This has indeed dealt with the very, very worst parts of the cycle lane, but it remains in an appalling condition, forcing cyclists out of the already far too narrow cycle lane and into the main carriageway. Please visit the site and try riding a bike along on it, and ideally ask someone with arthritic hands to do this - you will soon see that the problem goes much further than a couple of potholes that are large enough to meet the criteria for repair that are based on the impact on drivers and cars, not cyclists and bicycles. The cycle lane needs to be rideable by cyclists, and this requires maintenance to a standard that applies to them, not to drivers. In the absence of the protected cycle lanes that are actually needed please, at the very least, resurface the area that is conceded to cyclists to bring it up to a decent standard, and repaint the lines to meet the 2.0m recommendation from DfT.

30cm pothole on Elms Road, near to the traffic calming/ pedestrian crossing, 26th April

Fri, 26 Apr 2024 09:01:42 +0100
51.752651 -1.298255

Big pothole opened up to the underlying layer of ballast; vehicles now actively avoiding it so both increasing the pressure on the margins of this road and swerving unpredictably - particularly a problem given the location, by a school and a designated crossing point. This pothole started emerging as a result of the pothole that has since been filled - presumably the pressure on the carriageway increased as motor traffic tried to avoid the other pothole. It's been in its present condition for several weeks now.

Pothole approx 10cm long, 7cm wide at widest point, and 4cm deep, on Eynsham bound carriageway of Eynsham road, 26th April

Fri, 26 Apr 2024 08:55:48 +0100
51.750363 -1.302546

The pothole sits a little way past the junction with Westway, and close to the westbound cycle lane. It's not easy to spot until you're on it; it has the potential to catch both motor traffic and bicycles due to position and its lack of visibility. If a bike went into it it would cause serious problems for the rider. Just spotted today, but clearly been developing for some time to get to the current size and depth.
