Potholes, 28th March

There are a group of potholes on the entry to the residential slip road that are quite deep and in my opinion dangerous to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. These have been there a while but have been getting bigger and deeper due to the weather and heavy vehicles that use the road.

Excessive rain has washed at the chippings placed in the deep ruts on either side of the road. These ruts are more than 100m in diameter and would damage any car forced into them. The chippings are all over the road surface mingled with lots of mud, and dangerous to drive on. This road is our only exit from the village if not using the A1 dangerous enough especially for those no longer as confident in crossing the a1

Pothole on road/cycleway problem, 15th January

Mon, 15 Jan 2024 10:09:24 +0000
52.877094 -0.626341

I was travelling from Liverpool to Norwich and was diverted from the A1 to the A52 via Whalebone Lane due to a crash at the Newark turn off. This was the next quickest route. When leaving the A1, I headed eastbound along Whalebone Lane. There was no signage to suggest the road was in disrepair and that there were roadworks at the other end. As I travelled along Whalebone Lane, I had to slow down and maneuvre past several clusters of potholes on the left hand side of the carriageway. As I approached the crossroads at NG33 5BX, I was having to avoid potholes on both the left and right hand side of the road. I can't be precise as to which of the many potholes caused the incident but somewhere shortly before, across, or shortly after the crossroads, my front drivers side wheel hit a significantly large pothole. It must have been the size of a grid on the road. Due to the visibility being poor with no lightning (it is a B road so I can understand no lighting), and because I was approaching the train bridge at the bottom of the hill, I continued on to find a suitable place to stop. Eventually, when I stopped, my tyre was 80% deflated and I had to call a mobile tyre replacement service to assist.

Pothole on road/cycleway problem, 11th January

Customer wishes to report pothole and make a claim. 'Following my AA route planner I turned off the A1 onto Whalebone Lane. It was approximately 8pm and dark with no street light. I drove over or through the pothole/s on the left hand side of the road. They were very deep and it was a tremendous thump. They were not visible at that time. Shortly after my tyre pressure warning light came on and then after that it became apparent I had a front flat tyre. I called the AA to replace the tyre. I continued on my homeward journey with the damaged tyre now in the boot. Next morning, 10th January, I discovered the rear tyre on that same side was now also flat'

Pothole on road/cycleway problem, 8th January

Mon, 08 Jan 2024 09:04:39 +0000
52.878151 -0.621

At approximately 0700 on Saturday, December 23 2023 my car (Seat Leon KY15RPU) suffered a blowout of its nearside front tyre after striking a pothole on Whalebone Lane, near Little Ponton (NG33). The pothole was located immediately after crossing the River Whitham bridge on the eastbound carriageway. The pothole was steep-sided, approximately 15cm deep, 1m long and 80cm wide. The vehicle was travelling well within the speed limit. Due to the size of the pothole I was unable to safely alter my direction of travel to avoid passing through it. The impact caused immediate and total failure of the tyre, rendering the car stranded. The tyre required roadside repair by specialist company Tanvic Tyres.
