Continued Obstructive and Dangerous Parking, 21st April

Sun, 21 Apr 2024 12:18:54 +0100
51.678955 -3.227238

As highlighted and submitted to CCBC previously, there is no visibility for cars leaving Maes-Y-Graig Street and joining Commercial Street. This is the fifth submission to ‘FixMyStreet’ regarding this issue, and is disappointing considering the potential likelihood of harm to the public. Cars and vans are frequently left outside shops on opposite sides of Commercial Street, leading to poor or no visibility of the road. Motorists clearly ignore the double-yellow lines and frequently park their vehicles here, sometimes for a prolonged period. As you can see from the photograph, this is not a ‘one-off’ or an isolated issue. Given the number of previously submitted reports, parking here now seems to be seen as commonplace. Children and parents regularly utilise these roads to access the primary school, and places them at increased risk of an avoidable harm. This has also been highlighted as an issue near Vere Street, just a short distance down the road. There have been numerous accidents and a death of a motorcyclist on this stretch of road over the past few years, and it seems accidents need to happen before the Council take notice. I would be grateful if CCBC could liaise with Gwent Police on how this issue can be resolved before another fatality occurs.

Pile of burnt wood, 21st April

51.658846 -3.235602

Saturday 20/04/2024 at approx 15.30 Two men dumped a lorry load of burnt wood on derelict ground behind my home. They said they would be back to tidy it up but they never returned. They said they have permission from the landowner to store materials there. It looks an eyesore and a fire risk.

No active or passive pedestrian crossings for 2 primary schools, 4th March

Mon, 04 Mar 2024 10:52:44 +0000
51.668494 -3.222932

In early 2022 the school crossing patrol for pupils attending Ysgol Gymraeg Trelyn and Pengam Primary (essentially opposite each other along Commercial Street) retired. She was not replaced and Caerphilly Council's assessment found that children did not require a safe method of crossing this road, despite endemic speeding and dangerous driving, illegal parking, frequent HGV usage etc. An elderly lady was killed just down the road from here after being run over by a man driving dangerously just a couple of weeks ago in 2/24, indicating how urgent this issue is. Caerphilly Council still refuse to provide a safe method of crossing this road despite this tragedy, and pupils are endangered unnecessarily. An ideal solution would be to install traffic lights to enable safe crossing along Commercial Street between the schools with an SCP assisting children as needed. This would also help with the issue of speeding. Failing that, a pedestrian crossing would still be an improvement on the current situation.

Obstructive parking, 13th August

Sun, 13 Aug 2023 17:40:14 +0100
51.679125 -3.227656

Cars continuing to park on double-yellow lines at the bottom of Maes-Y-Graig Street. The Highway Code tells motorists that they must not stop or park ‘opposite or within 32 feet of a junction, except in an authorised parking bay’. Additionally, cars also park outside the convenience stores on Commercial Street, which presents a further hazard to motorists due to poor visibility upon leaving and entering this junction. Similar issues have been submitted to Caerphilly County Borough Council and are archived here: https://www.postcodearea.co.uk/postaltowns/cardiff/cf818je/fixmystreet/

Overgrown Grass, 2nd July

Sun, 02 Jul 2023 11:57:19 +0100
51.677957 -3.230028

There are significant areas of overgrown grass in this area, and leading down into the area approaching Gilfach Fargoed Primary School. Having seen an increased period of warm weather over the past few weeks, the grass in beginning to become dry, with the potential of a significant area of dried grass which could be liable to fire. Additionally, the overgrowth of grass can cause fungus and disease to spread, and considering the proximity to the school, this could be a potential public health hazard.

Water Leak on Maes-Y-Graig Street, 2nd July

Sun, 02 Jul 2023 11:47:50 +0100
51.679065 -3.228391

There has been a water leak in this location since August 2022, and has been attended by Dwr Cymru who assured residents that it had been resolved; however, there is still a notable leak and presence of water which flows down the street and into the guttering. There is a plastic covering over the location at present, yet upon lifting this, there is still a noticeable patch of water which highlights that this issue has not been resolved. Additionally, whilst I appreciate that the plastic cover is there for the safety of those using the pavements, there are residents of Maes-Y-Graig Street who are elderly and at increased risk of falls, and this could be seen as a trip-hazard due to the height and size of the cover itself.
