There are three established trees in the market place of Hexham; it used to be four. These trees are significant to the area in which they are situated, forming part of the main vista and essence of the market place. They are integral to the character and appearance of the market place. In recent years, one of the four trees, the one situated close to the Moot Hall, sadly died and was felled. I watched this tree slowly die over numerous years due to girdling. The tree had outgrown its home, and the iron grates installed when the trees were planted, meant to protect the earth surrounding the tree, became a noose around the tree's cambium, slowly strangling it until it was beyond saving and had to be removed.
This could have been prevented by removing the iron grates before the tree grew too large to fit within its structure.
There are three trees that remain, and all three of them need urgent attention before they succumb to the same slow death by girdling.
The tree closest to the Abbey has managed to push the iron grates out of their stone surrounds, which may well save the tree, as these may slide over the top of the stone flags. However, it still needs attention, and it would be worthwhile to investigate if the grate can be removed. If not, then the stone flags could be adjusted to allow the grate to move out unobstructed from the tree as it pushes out.
The other two trees are much simpler to save; the grates are right up against the trunks so girdling will start to happen soon, but they would lift up now as the tree has not yet grown into the metal. However, time is short for this.
These grates should be removed and modified to give more room for the tree to grow, and then replaced.
It would be tragic to see these trees fall to the same fate as the one that has been lost already, and utterly preventable if action is taken now.
I hope that something can be done to preserve their significance and the beauty they bring to this historic site.

Hedge grows halfway across the pavement., 6th May
Narrow pavement half blocked by overgrown hedge at one end. Path forms route to school so kids walk in the road. This has been an issue for ages and hedge is trimmed regularly but never cut back to property edge.

There is a very large tree covered in ivy which seems to be dead and may become a danger to public., 5th May
There are two trees next to each other on the west side of Eastgate. The southerly one is still OK but the northerly one seems to have died and may become a danger to the public and property. Quite a few trees in that area have been attended to over the last few months but this seems to have been missed. Can we please ask that it is checked by a professional. We did report these trees to Sam ? many years ago but it was not considered to be a danger at that time but things have changed.

Damaged bin in layby, 4th May
The bin had had loose footings for a while and now the structure is insecure. More litter is accumulating in the surrounding area as the internal bin does not seat correctly. It is encouraging roadside litter as it blows around

New Road Layout On Roundabout Safey improvements in the 1st picture its the new road layout and the new road layout is adding 2 lanes to roundabout beacuse in 2nd picture other roundabouts in hexham had 2 lanes and it will help on this roundabout remove all roadmarking and paint it like the photo 2 lanes on Alemouth Rd for the quese likly on taht bit on road in lane 1 ahead and right lane 2 right only please also do just make the road markings solid lines make them like road markings, chevons added on every exit look in the photo were the chevons are near the little islands and look at the first picture and see what i missed Thank you so much i hope this scheme happens

Definitively analysed + water tests by Northumbrian Water (latest today)->'NOT water supply issue'. NCC abandoned repair for past year. Desperate need for NCC Groundworks to discover source of leak/repair/reinstate footpath & community garden. On walking footpath to schools. unsightly & dangerous.

No bins for dog poo, 2nd May
Since the new path has been completed three of the bins have been removed. This has resulted in people either not picking up dog waste or throwing the bags into the river. The bin beside the railway crossing was overflowing with bags. When are the bins going to be replaced it is well over a week now?

Collapsing drain cover causing drive to drop., 1st May
The drain cover at the end of my driveway which is on the road is collapsing in on itself and the tarmac has cracked and dipped into the void. This has caused my driveway edge bricks to drop and is therefore causing damage to my driveway. It requires the road to be fixed and drain cover to be reset. In addition the tarmac is coming away from the edge tiles along my garden front lawn. I have a further 9 photos I can share to show the tarmac edging and more of the drain cover.
