Potholes along the whole stretch of this road, 12th March

Fri, 12 Mar 2021 10:28:49 +0000
52.128456 0.888413

There is a need for a pothole survey from Hitcham bends (Brickhouse Fm on the map) all the way up to the junction at the end of this road (Popples on the map). I could make numerous reports along this stretch but there are some which are deep enough to cause damage to cars.

Large series of potholes on Hitcham bends, 12th March

Fri, 12 Mar 2021 10:23:23 +0000
52.124609 0.892125

Since these potholes are only ever patched and due to drainage issues (which means the road is often wet) coupled with bad weather, the road is in a state of disrepair again with large and deep potholes forming.

Various pot holes on this bit of road, very dangerous!, 19th February

Fri, 19 Feb 2021 22:09:24 +0000
52.123992 0.893035

So...here we are again reporting the bi annual issue of potholes on this but if road. Once again there are several, probably about 7 or 8 large potholes in the road. They are in various places and make the road dangerous as you have to drive across the whole road to avoid them plus they’re also on a bend so it’s far from ideal. Babergh Council, I appreciate you coming out to fix these potholes time after time but I wondered when we will get a more permanent fix rather than these temporary patches that only last a few months. These potholes are literally the same ones that come back time after time. I suggested last time that the frequent running rain water off the field at the top of the road was opening these holes up each time. You did come and did our some of the ditch to increase the flow but what I didn’t understand was why you only did a very small section. This basically meant to at the issue continued and therefore was only half addressed. I do think that if this water problem was solved by properly digging out the drainage ditch on the side of the road, then the water would be contained and not run down the road so much. Anyway it’s up to you but personally I would dig the ditch out all the way down and retarmac that whole bit of road rather than the individual pot holes. I do think it needs to be a two pronged approach as anything less is merely a sticking plaster until we contact you again in six months time. Thank you :)

Land washing away, 18th January

Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:46:09 +0000
52.123101 0.894206

The road is subject to flooding at the point where the BT access point is within the footpath. As a result of this cars are sending vast amounts of water onto the land adjoining this washing away the soil and exposing the roots of the large trees. Due to the saturation of the land trees are becoming unstable and falling down. There is a danger that these trees may fall on a passing car causing death.

Metal road sign in ditch, 18th January

Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:33:44 +0000
52.121131 0.897586

A sign warning drivers of workmen has fallen into the ditch. This is an area prone to flooding and therefore this may block the duct which runs under the road. In addition to this the sign and plastic barriers were put up in spring last year but no work to repair the damaged barrier has been done.

Regular road and ditch flooding, 24th December

Thu, 24 Dec 2020 15:25:38 +0000
52.139084 0.906639

This road floods after rain and snow. In freezing conditions it forms a solid sheet of ice. Traffic seek to avoid it by crossing the white line but this places them in head-on conflict with oncoming traffic coming round the blind bend, as shown. The pictures are after only one night of rain; further rain/snow compounds the hazard. Road/ditch flooding also floods the adjacent field, where livestock are. This hazard has existed for years and the County Council cannot or will not fix it.

Very large and deep potholes again, 28th April

Multiple large (>45cms), deep (>20cms) potholes on their blind corner. These will damage a car wheel and tyre, throw a cyclist off or potentially kill a motorcyclist. Again this road is breaking up. Rather then sending chap with a shovel full of tarmac why not save money and fix it permanently

Several potholes on the bends around this street, 29th February

Sat, 29 Feb 2020 18:40:35 +0000
52.124635 0.89217

There are potholes on this section of road that have been repaired as of the 14th February have started to fail again. Further around the corner there are other potholes that still require you to drive on the other side of the road to avoid. A word of warning for drivers. I burst a tire on this bend in the end of January, and Suffolk County Council deny responsibility and state that they carried out an inspection of the road on 10th Jan 2020 leading to repairs on 14th Feb 2020. These repairs are clearly inadequate and have started to fail already, and there are many potholes on the preceding and following corners that are still unrepaired. It's worth warning drivers to be careful as any pothole damage will not be claimable from Suffolk County Council.

As a previous poster has said, this is a very dangerous place to try to take photos as it is on blind bends; however, I've persisted as this is an accident waiting to happen with cars taking avoiding action and veering across the road. Only three photos can be posted but I've managed to show a representative spread of the many potholes spread over this stretch (the last photo shows five alone). This series of potholes begins at the junction with Balls Hill and continues all the way up to the white/black National Speed Limit sign on the Bury Road direction Brettenham. The bottle which I have added to the pothole for scale (and removed after) is 23cm length. This shows just how large these potholes are. Repeated reports since November 2019.

There are several deep potholes on this section of road, 24th January

Fri, 24 Jan 2020 20:34:15 +0000
52.124023 0.892833

I wasn’t able to take photos as it’s not a safe place to stop but there are around 8 deep potholes on this bit of road. There are various ones on this road also as you continue up the road towards Brettenham. You may want to rethink how it is addressed as there are always potholes here. They get repaired and then within a matter of weeks they open up again or new ones appear. Personally I think that the road should be relaid as countless repair jobs in the past haven’t proven effective. I presume that it would be cheaper to just redo the road than constantly come out to repair the same holes. Also there is often a lot of water than runs down this road which is water that has run off the adjacent fields. I think that this water is actually the cause of the potholes and this also needs to be addressed at the same time as the water will continue to cause problems. There are meant to be drainage ditches on either side of the road but these haven’t been maintained and as a result water runs down the road rather than the ditch which in turn causes the potholes. So... to really fix this I think that both issues need to be tackled at the same time. Many thanks and I’d be happy to provide more information if required.

Multiple large and deep pot holes, 7th January

Pot holes predominantly in the direction of Brettenham on the Hitcham bends from the Kettlebaston turning all the way up to the national speed limit applies sign. These need urgent attention, traffic is using the wrong side of the road to avoid on already narrow bends.
