Damage to kerb stones and islands, 21st January
Problem Description: I am writing with regards the damage caused (by highways contractors) to the verges and islands to the slip roads of the A66 in Brough. These have been completely destroyed by ruts and some of kerb stones pushed out of place. As a parish council we undertake to cut and maintain these areas even though it is the highways responsibility. However due to their present conditions it would not possible for our grass cutter to undertake this task at the start of the cutting season

I have been in touch with our local highways department who say it’s a national highways issue.

Residents snow gate, 8th January
With the upcoming snow is there a plan for how residents and farmers can access their properties? Currently a fence across where the gate was and a huge pile of dirt making access seem impossible.

Unnecessary lane closures, 7th July
Travelling today and traffic is very busy but there are literally miles of cones closing a lane with zero works going on. No sight of any workers yet lanes closed adding massively to congestion. Also no A66 warnings from M74.

Pot holes in road, 7th June
Several large pot holes are along this stretch of the road and have been there for a considerable amount of time. One in particular outside West View Farmhouse causes the house to shake when loaded wagons hit it, along with constant noise all day, everyday of vehicles hitting it.

A66 two potholes, 16th May
Travelling east bound I hit the first pot hole with a thud which shook the car. I pulled over in the next lay by and fortunately no obvious damage. A week later I travelled the same route and knew where to look to avoid doing the same. I noticed there is a second one developing which I avoided. However a motor bike might not be so lucky in staying safe. They can be identified because they appear lighter in colour as if they have been repaired before with concrete!! I may be wrong. Both on the inside lane near the lane divider white lines.

Inadequate 50mph speed limit signage, 30th March
The current fixed speed limit signs between Brough and Appleby are inadequate and fail to slow traffic. We strongly believe that, for the next five years, until the new dual carriageway is built, either flashing speed signs or - better still -average speed cameras, should be fitted to reduce the speed and therefore the number of fatalities and injuries that will otherwise occur.

Snow Gates, 26th September
Good Afternoon,
I'd be grateful if whoever is in charge of the snow gates on the A66 at Stainmore could get in touch to discuss them.
In anticipation of the winter period, it would be good if they could be repaired and ready for use. I raised the issues last winter, but the issues are still there and haven't been repaired:
- The warning lights on the gates don't work.
- The big warning signs immediately before the gates don't work.
- The bypass gate doesn't work. (this is used by locals and services, it caused significant issues last winter for locals, resulting in the gates having to be lifted and closed repeatedly.)
Thanks, PC 2542 Philip Hall Appleby Police Station, Cumbria Police philip.hall@cumbria.police.uk

Snow gate bypass for resident's local access not working., 6th December
From Sat 27th Nov to Mon 30th, the snow gates on the A66 east bound were closed just east of Brough. I was trying to reach my elderly parents (86 &82) who live about 1/2 mile further east. To allow local access, there is a gate from the access road to Augill caravan park, back onto the A66. This is operated by entering a code on the key pad. On entering the code, there was a whirring of the motor but the gate didn't move. The result was local residents couldn't get to their homes via this route and the alternative minor roads were quickly blocked with stuck vehicles. Tellingly, there was a maintenace sticker on the gate saying next maintenance due Apr 21. Please could you ensure this gate is in working order ( preferably before we get much more snow) and confirmation of the key code is issued to local residents.

No entry signs difficult to see at night, 21st August
Last night exiting the a66(W) at brough I met a car coming in the opposite (wrong) direction on the exit slip road. They were obviously not familiar with the junction; stopped and performed a 3 point turn, but the outcome could have been very different had they managed to join the main (wrong) carriageway. I think at night it is very easy to make a mistake here - car headlights don’t cast light on the no entry signs and I don’t believe there is no entry written on the road or directional arrows on the slip road surface.

Potential damage to carriageway caused by rabbit burrows, 9th August
The owner of the field adjacent to the carriageway at the point marked has complained to myself, Parish Clerk, about the number of rabbits in his field which are living in burrows on the carriageway verge. They are causing damage to his field, but he is also claiming that they are causing a problem by undermining the carriageway. He states that approx five years ago there was a similar problem which was addressed using gas. The field owner is a road haulage operator and as such has, I believe, relevant knowledge and understanding of the issue. I have seen the spot and can vouch for the high number of rabbits in the field!
