Loose manhole cover, 8th April
For a couple of weeks, a manhole cover around a patched section of the westbound carriageway appears to have worked loose, creating a loud bang whenever a vehicle drives over it. This is keeping local residents awake, so I hope you will be able to rectify it.

Vehicles positioning hazardously at give way line, 2nd April
Re. Junction onto main carriageway of the A66 at Braithwaite (when exiting Braithwaite on B5292 to A66).
This is a potentially dangerous junction, with hazard exacerbated by the type of road markings used in the centre of the A66 side-road to mark the demarcation between opposing carriageway directions.
Three times - most recently on 31 March 2024 - I have observed cars travelling from Braithwaite crossing to the opposite side of the carriageway, when approaching the give way line prior to joining the main carriageway of the A66.
It seems that some unfamiliar or careless drivers think that the road joining the A66 at that point is one way, with a left lane for turning left, and (incorrectly) a right lane for turning right.
As I recall, the centre line on that A66 side-road is not a solid ‘do not cross’ line. Maybe it should be.
Clearly this could contribute to an accident, particularly in the event of an eastbound vehicle on the main A66 trying to make a right turn to join up with the B5292, but not being able to complete the manoeuvre through the A66 junction, due to an oncoming vehicle on the wrong side of the slip road that joins the B5292 to the main carriageway of the A66.
If this reporting tool allows, I will attach a photo taken from Google Street View, to illustrate the issue.
Cumberland Council Highways state that the section of road in question is the responsibility of National Highways.

The timber fence that separates the A66 from the minor road alongside it has blown out. 5 fence panels have come down in the winds. We have moved them off the highway into the verge of the minor road. The remaining fence is vulnerable still. The panels blew down on 21st Jan around 9pm.

Collapsing manhole in road outside Thornriggs, 7th November
For many months now, we have been subject to appalling levels of noise - a hammering sound that is more than audible inside the double glazed house. The manhole supporting structure is subsiding and the manhole cover hammers it loudly every time a vehicle passes by on the carriageway opposite Thornriggs. I have placed the map pin as accurately as I can. The hammering is now of such a level that I suggest the manhole cover will soon break or the underlying structure will fail.

Appalling event behaviour on A66, 18th June
I would like to raise serious safety (and highways) concerns about The Lakesman triathlon that is taking place today in the Northern Lakes area (from Keswick) the behavour of the competitors on the bikes is shocking (weaving in and out of both inside and outside of traffic on the A66, blocking lanes, throwing litter on to the side of the highway, non police/highways staff ‘directing’ traffic on the A66, including bringing carriageways to a complete stop to allow cyclists to move about/get drinks/food/fluid etc (this is on top of the fact that the mere presence of the race on a trunk road is causing huge tailbacks, is shocking. it has just taken me 24 mins from the Portinscale Junction to the Crosthwaite Roadabout at Keswick due to this event. How has this been given consent? Were you consulted consulted? What guidance was the event provided with? Please log this as a formal complaint against the race/its behaviour/its shocking attitude to roadsafety etc.

Deep potholes in Next Ness Lane, 13th April
The size and depth of the potholes particularly between The Stables and Beckstones are seriously an issue. Tebay Lane is also very very bad - a van was towed out of a pothole only last week! It is so bad someone has put a bollard in Next Ness Lane to warn owners of vehicles to try and drive around. It is a country lane so very little room to manoeuvre around! It has been there for a very long time and getting bigger all the time.
