The tarmac surrounding the cover has also deteriorated and lifted resulting in the whole cover moving. Chronic traffic problem, 29th November
Solving Banwell's Traffic Problem with an Intelligent Traffic Light System 23/11/2022
The village of Banwell, North Somerset, UK has been blighted with severe traffic problems for many decades. It lies at the junction of the A371 and A368 (BS29 6AE), at the point where the A371 is a narrow street with a bottleneck that is not wide enough for two cars to pass. This road layout causes regular traffic congestion and has an adverse impact on air quality and amenity in the village. Much thought has been given to this problem for several decades, and at present a by-pass is planned that will alleviate the problem to some degree, but further help will needed in coming years as traffic volume increases as a result of new housing.
Intelligent (or “Smart”) traffic light systems are an ideal solution to manage Banwell’s problem. Such a system would be able to balance the demands of the three main traffic flows through the village, as well as to identify the much smaller flows from High Street and Church Street. Intelligent traffic control uses IT, sensors and artificial intelligence to optimise traffic flows. The system can measure approaching traffic well before it reaches the pinch points so that they can minimise stoppages, congestion, stress, and accidents, and can reduce emissions of particulates and greenhouse gases from exhausts. One study found a 28% reduction in waiting times and a 6.5% reduction in CO2 emissions https://tinyurl.com/2p83rh3m
More detail on how they work can be found on this link https://tinyurl.com/2v7rep3j.
Intelligent traffic manufacturing systems are available from a number of manufacturers.
The purpose of this communication is to find whether stakeholders have already investigated this approach to Banwell’s problems, and if so what the outcome was, and if not, what interest there may be in this solution.
My interest in this matter is as an occasional user of the A368 and a member of Zero Carbon North Somerset.
Many thanks for your attention.
Yours sincerely
Richard Lawson
