Ree Preservation Order application, 8th December

Tue, 08 Dec 2020 15:28:50 +0000
53.981802 -2.097256

Would it be possible to request a tree preservation order on a tree that is earmarked for cutting down by Gargrave Parish Council? I want to preserve the loss of this tree which is in imminent danger of being felled. The tree is a Sycamore and is on the riverbank in Mill Lane, Gargrave. It is the 2nd tree after you pass the turn-off for Pinfold, and it is opposite a telegraph pole, it also has a red cross on its trunk. The tree has a visual amenity value in terms of the aesthetics of the river bank, forming a line of trees adjacent to the river. It is accessible to local residents and to the numerous visitors we receive to this part of the village due to its proximity to the river and stepping stones and the football field. This section of the river Aire is lacking in tree cover (as confirmed by various tree planting initiatives along the Aire). This is a relatively mature tree and provides a substantial canopy of shade over the river. River temperatures are rising due to climate change. Even small changes can have an impact on the health of wildlife living in freshwaters. The shade this tree provides is not insignificant in the fight against climate change and rising temperatures. Fish are able to utilise the shade provided to escape predators. The tree also provides leaves and woody material to the river, and so is a primary source of nutrients and food for detritus shredding organisms such as Gammarus, which are important food for trout and birds such as dippers, both of which frequent the Aire. The tree provides shelter for aquatic animals eg mayflies needing to rest and to metamorphose into the final breeding stage of their lifecycle. In addition the tree provides a valuable environment for birds both in terms of food and protection and also as a safe nesting sight. We routinely observe bats in the immediate vicinity and are of the opinion that bats most likely roost in this tree. In the absence of a bat survey, any disturbance to the tree at this time of year when bats are dormant would be at detriment to their survival. The position of the tree as part of a row of trees helps form a wildlife corridor, helping certain species move through the landscape. This section of the village has incurred flooding on a number of occasions recently. Bank erosion is of a concern, and this tree would appear to have an excellent root infrastructure which helps stabilise river bank and so reduces the rate of bank erosion. This can be witnessed by the extreme soil erosion on either side of the tree, where its root system ends. The Parish Council’s original plan 5 years ago was to fell the tree in conjunction with advice provided by Prof Jon Grey of the Wild Tout Trust. Prof Grey is now of the view that that advice is invalid given the passage of time and subsequent changes to the river in this location.
