Exposed grid, 22nd April
There is an exposed grid on Whalley Road right by the bus stop on this main road. If a car hits it it will damage a tyre & if a cyclist hits it I don’t know what would happen as there are sharp sides showing.

Uneven pavement due to lorrys parking on the bridge, 22nd April

Channel and potholes, 16th April
Big channel of churned up tarmac and potholes along it. It’s right next to where cars park so cars, motorbikes and cyclists can’t avoid it. It’s dangerous. This was a botched up job when it was fixed. What a waste of money. A proper job should be done in the first place.

Ditch full of sewage, 11th April
The house here seems to have some issue with blocked or overflowing drains and there is a ditch to the side of the road which stinks of raw sewage. It's a public health issue.

Dip in Road / Road Sinking, 1st April
Once again the Road is seemingly collapsing from underneath outside 224 Bolton Road West. The road at this location keeps sinking and is developing a depression. The hole has been filled several times and has been stable for about 6 months but it's again worsening. This is producing a noticeable bounce in vehicles going over the road, particularly bad with large vehicles. Low Riding vehicles / sports cars are now grounding out when riding the dip.
There is also a smell of gas in this area. Let's hope we don't get another Summerseat.
The council have dumped a few loads of bitmac into the hole over the last 3years but never really addressed the cause as the road continues to sink.
Bolton Road West is an ancient road and is not otherwise subject to subsidence. This depression would suggest something is amiss under the road such as a damaged sewer or failed culvert.
Where is the council engineers professional curiosity? This should be a concern and the subject of further investigation as opposed to just dumping more and more bitmac into the hole.
Please investigate further before a dangerous failure occurs. This is a busy A road and the potential liability massive given the numerous reports made to the council over the years, the council having attended by filling the dip have tacitly acknowledged the defect and this liability would be hard to dispute. Numerous reports of this defect are visible, publically on this site.

Raised Manhole which United Utilities isn't for them to repair., 14th March
I have been in contact with United Utilities regarding a raised manhole cover. They have advised me that as this isn't raised / damaged but due to erosion of concreate they would not fix it. This manhole I believe sits at the start of the public footpath / right of way and is now causing a trip hazard and danger to the public. The erosion is being caused mainly from water running down from the hills above Ramsbottom. United Utilities told me that if you tell them to fix it and fill in a form they will, they have also told me that they cannot authorise the residents to fix it as its their property. Can someone please advise how this can be made safe. Thanks

Retaining wall for Rawson’s Rake collapsing, 24th February
Stones dislodged can be viewed on Rake Fold, off Rawson’s Rake near lamp post. Danger of wall collapsing into Rawson’s Rake, which is used by children walking to and from Holcombe Village School from Ramsbottom area. Has been reported once with no action taken by the council.

64cm x 47cm x 10cm pothole plus others and crumbling footpath edge, 5th February
This pothole is one a series on Shilton Street in Ramsbottom that have been temporarily repaired for years. There is a line of potholes approximately 20 metres long along the edge of the pavement.
There are always cars parked along one side of Shilton Street so all vehicles are forced to drive through the pothole or onto the pavement which collapsed years ago.
When it rains and the potholes are full of water every passing vehicle splashes dirty water on my car and my wife's car which are parked on our drive immediately adjacent to the road and even as far as the front door and porch which are also covered in dirty water, it is impossible to keep our cars clean and the stone chippings from the asphalt hit both cars and are covering our drive.
The local authority send a team out whenever the potholes reappear and are reported, which is often, and use asphalt from buckets which they place into the potholes, then stamp on the asphalt with their feet to fill the holes. It never works, sometimes within hours the asphalt has lifted out leaving the potholes empty again because of the constant traffic.
I have spoken in the past to the manager of the local highways department who was friendly and informative who told me that the only way that this problem could be fixed permanently was for the entire pavements on both side of the street to be taken up and rebuilt and the road resurfaced. He said that he only has the budget to fix potholes and the major work of rebuilding the road, which would require closing the road for a period of time, was a matter for the the Highways Agency, and that due to the cost it was unlikely it would ever happen.
The local residents have been complaining about this for years, it is only a matter of time before these potholes cause a serious accident. In face last year a delivery driver tripped in one of the potholes and injured his ankle.
In the meantime our cars and property are getting damaged, will the local authority reimburse us for this?

Residents Filling in Road Defects, 1st February
We are building the foundation for an extension and will be pouring concrete for the foundations weather permitting. We have ordered a few extra barrows full of concrete.
Why am i telling you this...?
There is a large damaged grid on Bolton Road West, outside number 59/61. This drain has broken out annually for the last 10 years. The drain like most on Bolton Road West doesn't work and as it fills with water causes hydraulic pumping of the saturated liquefied earth causing the bitmac to break out and the road to hole.
This has annual event has been reported several times since Oct/ November - the pins are on your site. A similar defect nearby was repaired a few weeks ago, but this remains.
We can only assume the council has no intention of repairing this defect it is our [the residents] intention to repair this defect ourselves by removing the defunct gully iron. Removing the loose spoil and filling the void level with the road surface with Concrete. We may also remove other nearby gullies that never take water and show signs of similar defects.
I understand that this may cause consternation on several levels at the council (as did the residents repairing Nuttall Lane a few years ago) and as a result of this action the may be a family of young cats born in the highways department. That is why we are giving you this final opportunity to repair the defect before we take direct action to ensure our own safety.
