Roads not being gritted, 26th January

Sat, 26 Jan 2013 19:50:44 +0000
54.755905 -5.922685

I myself and a few other neighbours raised an issue that a grit/salt bin was removed from our area - Seskin Avenue/Park/Road - we have finally got this replaced - of which we are grateful. My husband who is a pensioner was having to dig a} me out to let me get to work - one day I was unable to get out at all!! b} He was having to dig out other neighbours who were pensioners also. Surely a pensioner shouldn't have to be doing this due to lack of our area not being 'treated' Surely with the 'glut' of grit we should be entitled to safety in our area and as a council you have a duty of cae for the neighbourhood. c} Today (Saturday 26th Jan 2013) I was setting off to work at 8.20am - the Straid Road and the Calhame Road was again NOT gritted - can this matter be looked into to avoid accidents or danger for drivers on the road. I travelled up to Newtownabbey and the whole way up the roads were untreated. A work colleague's car spun on the main Ballyclare Road to the other side of the road and left her totally shaken - I myself skidded on the Ballyclare Road just at the Corr's Corner roundabout - another colleague coming out of the Carntall Road area had the same experience. Can this matter be addressed please. I also e mailed the council re getting the white lines renewed on the main Larne line and to see if the white lines leading in to Straid can be extended as the roads in the Winter months are hard to travel on with clarity due to weather conditions and poor markings. These roads leading in to Straid are used much more in recent years with a lot more traffic - some drivers not taking much care as to what side of the road they are travelling on and at speed - the extended white lines would be a help to avoid accidents. Sincerely Mrs J Thompson

Removal of Grit Bin, 11th January

Fri, 11 Jan 2013 20:16:23 +0000
54.757180369837 -5.9291652241662

I contacted the Roads division to request the return of our village grit box for the icy/snowy weather - this was in place for years at Seskin Road/Park - and was removed some months ago and has never been replaced. It is an essential for that corner as it leads on to the main Seskin Road and due to traffic coming over the hill from the Carrick direction can be very dangerous when trying to get out from Seskin Park when the roads are hit with icy/snowy weather. I was told by George Adamson from The Roads Division that we no longer meet the requirements for it - I wonder why considering the area hasn't changed and if anything it has got much busier on the roads due to larger volume of traffic. He said to speak to you about this as he would re-assess it but was almost certain his decision would be final. I look forward to your help in this matter. We have quite a few elderly people in the area and try to help them with their vehicles etc in bad weather conditions. Yours sincerely Mrs Thompson.
