It was created in 2001 and covers the Featherstone and Tempus areas of the Wakefield district. It is bordered to the east by the WF15 postcode, to the south by the WF10 postcode and to the west by the DN14 postcode.

WF13 postcode district is a largely residential area located just northwest of Wakefield city centre. The population of nearly 26,000 is almost equally divided between owner-occupiers and renters. The area is served by several primary schools, Featherstone Primary and St. Nicholas Primary, along with two secondary schools, Featherstone High School and Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy.

The area is also served by two local railway stations, Featherstone and Pontefract Baghill. This postcode district is also home to three main healthcare facilities: Featherstone Enterprise and Vocational Centre, Pontefract Hospital and Pinderfields Hospital.

The main high street in Featherstone, High Street, is a bustling one with excellent amenities and services available. The local shops range from supermarkets and chemists to clothing stores and electrical retailers. There are several pubs and restaurants and the area boasts several parks and green spaces.

The WF13 postcode is served by the A639 road which connects the major cities of Wakefield and Leeds, as well as the M62 motorway. Wakefield Bus Station is also located in this postcode district, providing transport for the local population.

In terms of leisure activities in WF13 postcode, there is an 18-hole golf course, a leisure centre with fitness, swimming, skiing and many other activities, a cinema, arcades and a bowling alley. The National Coal Mining Museum is also within the postcode.
