WF1 is surrounded by the postcode districts WF2 to the west, WF3 to the north, and WF4 to the south. Its main town centre is just off Westgate Wakefield in an area featuring both historical and modern architecture. This includes the nationally-acclaimed Hepworth Gallery and Wakefield Cathedral.

The majority of the postcode district is residential and commercial. The predominant businesses in this area are small retail outlets, pubs, and restaurants. There are also several excellent schools in and around the city centre, including Wakefield College, Wakefield Cathedral Primary School, and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School.

The Wakefield district itself is home to a variety of tourist attractions, such as the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and theNational Coal Mining Museum. Major shopping areas, including Wakefield's Kingsgate Shopping Centre and the Trinity Walk shopping centre, are both located within WF1. The area is also well serviced by public transport with several bus routes operating in the city.

WF1 residents benefit from the nearby Yorkshire Waterfront, which boasts a myriad of riverside walks and cycling routes. The canal basin is home to the restored Leeds and Liverpool Canal, offering a range of boat trips, wildlife, and heritage attractions.

The postcode district has experienced substantial growth in recent years. This is attributed, in part, to its excellent public transport links and affordable housing market. The area is popular with young families and retirees, who are drawn to the convenient location and lower cost of living.
