The term ‘Teesside' was first used in the 19th Century in relation to the expanding industrial centres around the River Tees. Today, the definition of the area is fluid and it can include Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland.
Despite covering an area of 67 square kilometres, the population of the TS6 postcode area is relatively small with an estimated population of 20,319 according to the 2011 Census. Nevertheless, it is significant in terms of industrial, technological and cultural activity and has become a major employment hub.
The TS6 postcode area is home to a number of key industries, including chemical and petrochemical production, engineering and marine manufacturing. The area has also become the centre for the UK's offshore wind industry with Teesside's Redcar Bulk Terminal handling over 80% of the UK's wind turbine components.
There are many diverse cultural and recreational activities present in the area. Home to the nearby Eston Hills, there are plenty of possibilities for outdoor pursuits such as hiking and biking. Along the coast there are wonderful beaches and popular tourist attractions, as well as the popular Roseberry Topping which stands at 320 metres.
Furthermore, the area is home to a number of popular music festivals, such as the Stockton Weekender which is held at the iconic Riverside Stadium. The area also has a wide selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes providing a great range of food and drink from across the world.
Finally, the area is paving the way for the future with Durham University and Teesside University both having their campuses in the area and offering a range of degree courses from science and engineering to the humanities. There are also a number of independent schools in the area.
