The area contains a few main shopping hubs, particularly in the larger villages. Cross Hands and Pontarddulais also have regular markets for local farmers to sell their produce. Local businesses provide services, such as car repairs, day care and beauty treatments.

Transport links in the area are generally good. The M4 motorway provides quick access to Swansea and Carmarthen, while regular bus services connect the villages with these larger towns.

The nearest train station, Llangennech, is around 5 miles from the centre of SA45 and provides services directly to Swansea, Cardiff and London.

The area also has a great range of leisure facilities including the Afan Forest Park, which offers bike trails, walks and other outdoor activities. The Afan Valley also holds events such as music festivals and sporting competitions.

Culture and entertainment is also prevalent in the area, with an abundance of pubs, pubs with live music, cinemas, theatres and libraries. There are also many local attractions such as the Amman Valley Railway and Children's Farm Park and the Dolaucothi Gold Mines.

Education and schooling within SA45 is provided by a range of primary schools and secondary schools including Maes Y Gwendraeth and Ysgol Ffynnon Taf. Ysgol Deganwy in Llandybie is also a Welsh medium school providing bilingual education.

SA45 is an area with an abundance of natural beauty, great transport links, a variety of leisure activities, culture and schooling as well as a thriving local business community and economy.
