SO17 is a postcode district located within the Southampton post town. Historically, it was first implemented in 1934 and initially consisted of a few larger properties and streets in the area. Nowadays, the SO17 postcode is largely found in the Western and Central parts of Southampton, including Portswood, Bassett, and Highfield.

It is considered to be a major area of student housing due to its location near the University of Southampton and other higher-education institutes. The majority of properties here are flats, but larger apartment blocks are an increasingly common sight.

Transportation links around the SO17 postcode district are superb, with mainline train services to London and other parts of the country being among the quickest within the city. Buses serve the local area and provide a cost-effective way to travel to Southampton City Centre and beyond.

The Southampton Common is one of the area's biggest open spaces, consisting of approximately 200 acres of parkland and woodlands to explore. The Common also includes a large lake with a boating lake and bird sanctuary, children's play area and outdoor gym equipment. There is also the Tennis Centre, a Wildlife Centre, and numerous entertainment events.

On the commercial side of the SO17 postcode, it is home to a few shopping spots; including the newly-registered Southgate Shopping Centre, as well as smaller chains and larger chains such as Sainsbury's Local, M&S, and Boots. Eateries that are easily accessible in SO17 include Nando's, KFC, ASK Italian and Costa.

The SO17 postcode district is also popular for its close proximity to the West Quay Centre - a huge shopping and leisure complex with more than 80 brands inside. In addition, attractions such as the Mayflower Theatre, Sea City Museum and Ocean Village Marina are nearby - all of which can offer exciting activities and attractions for all ages.
