The M27 and mainline train services run along the northern border of the area, providing quick access to both central Southampton and the many attractions that the City has to offer. Southampton Airport is also a short drive away. There's a good selection of bus routes running in the area, with a range of destinations.

The SO16 postcode has all the amenities one would expect from a densely populated suburb, including a good selection of primary and secondary schools, medical facilities and recreational parks. Southampton University's Highfield campus is located in the postcode, and there's a popular leisure centre, featuring a range of sports halls, fitness suite and squash courts. There's also a thriving shopping centre and indoor market in Shirley, alongside a variety of supermarkets, charity shops and local stores.
