The ZE3 postcode is the postcode for the Shetland Isles district of Scotland. The postcode area covers the islands of Unst, Yell, Fetlar, Whalsay and Papa Stour, as well as the main island of Shetland; a total of around 220 islands spread across 100 miles of sea. This postcode area includes a wide variety of landscapes which range from moorland and coast, to rugged cliffs, to islands of small lochs and rivers, heather, open hill, machair and deep blue sea.

The Shetland Isles are home to a wide range of wildlife and plant diversity. The islands host seabirds, waders, seals, otters, bats and other rare species. Otters can be seen in and around the coast of Shetland, and there are around 40 species of breeding birds. Seals can be found in the inter-tidal zone and are often seen basking on the shoreline.

The islands are also home to a variety of rare Arctic plants such as Saxifraga aizoides, Saxifraga cespitosa and Saxifraga oppositifolia, all found in the Shetland Isles. The Islands also support the largest colony of otters in Britain, and the world's largest colonies of terns.

The area is also home to a wide variety of archaeological sites, including the archaeological remains of Iron and Bronze Age to Medieval settlements, and a number of Viking sites. The island of Mousa is particularly known for its Iron Age Broch, which is still standing and is the best preserved Iron Age Broch in Scotland.

The Shetland Isles are also known for their music and culture, with traditional Shetland music, the fiddle being particularly prominent, as well as other traditional dancing.

In addition, the Islands make up part of the Viking Coast, and are connected to the North Atlantic Ocean via the North Sea. As a result, the archipelago has a maritime climate with mild winters and mild summers.

This postcode area, ZE3, is known in the UK as a remote and sparsely populated area but those who live here are proud of their natural heritage, their culture and their connection to the North Atlantic and the world.

Discrimination by Postcode

Discrimination by Postcode

You really couldn't make it up, could you? Some of the country's most vulnerable people are missing out on their weekly £25 Cold Weather Payment, just because the system that's in operation is discriminating against them because payments are based on postcode, rather than geographic location.
