There are a number of schools in the area, including St Thomas RC Primary, Bury Rd Primary, Greenacres Primary and Crompton House Secondary School. Royton is known for its parks which are maintained by the local council. These include Wilson Street Park, Fletcher Street Park, Kingfisher Park and Turf Lanes Playing Field.

Oldham's shopping district is located in Chadderton which is also found in the OL9 postcode. This area has many popular shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and an auditorium. The Civic Centre, which hosts public events and conferences, is also located in Chadderton. As well as a number of local schools such as Foxdenton Primary and Foxdenton Secondary, there is also a children's nursery, library and leisure club in the area.

Busk is a small village located in the postcode. It is mainly a farming village and is popular with walkers and ramblers who use the walking routes around the village. There are two pubs, two primary schools, a nursery and a church in the village. There is also an outdoor theatre and a café, which are popular destinations for locals.

Moorclose is the most rural area of the postcode, consisting of rural hamlets and open countryside. There is a small lake, as well as a number of shops, pubs and churches. Moorclose is popular with people who enjoy outdoor activities and is home to a golf course and motorcycle track.

Finally, Teeley is a village located in the OL9 postcode. It is a traditional farming community, with a school, church, a pub and a community centre. There are also many surrounding public footpaths and cycle routes. Teeley is also home to the National Trust's Blackstone Edge Nature Reserve and Visitors Centre, which attracts many nature lovers from around the world.
