SE17 POSTCODE REGION

London (SE17)

The SE17 postcode area is located in the London postcode town region, within the county of Greater London, and contains a total of 1057 individual postcodes.

There are 3 electoral wards in the SE17 postcode area, including London which come under the local authority of the Southwark Council.

Combining the whole postcode region, 18% of people in SE17 are classed as having an AB social grade, (i.e. 'white-collar' middle-upper class), compared to 27% across the UK.

This does not mean that the people of SE17 are poorer than other areas, but it may give an indication that there are areas of deprivation.

SE17 is a postcode district in the London Borough of Southwark, situated in the south east of the capital. It covers the areas of Walworth, Elephant and Castle and Kennington, with its post town being London. It was previously known as SE5 and has been responsible for the postcode district since 1857.

The area of SE17 is composed of commercial, residential and industrial areas. Within Walworth, Elephant and Castle and Kennington can be found a mix of terraced Victorian housing, 1930s blocks of flats, warehouses, market buildings, shops and council estates. The area is considered to be a sort of 'mini-Manhattan' due to its skyline of tall buildings.

Elephant and Castle is considered to be the 'hub' of SE17, with it being the intersection of the A2, A3 and the A201 roads. It is well-connected to the London Underground, with two Tube stations located within the postcode district: Elephant and Castle station (Northern and Bakerloo lines) and Kennington station (Northern line).

The highways and transport of SE17 are also well connected; the postcode district is within close proximity to two major road arteries in London (the A2/A3) and the Thameslink rail line runs through the middle of it. Furthermore, London's South Bank is just across the river from SE17, with pedestrian bridges and waterbus services allowing easy access.

The nightlife of SE17 is vibrant and multifarious, ranging from traditional pubs to modern cocktail bars and craft beer spots. Walworth is also host to the largest theatre in Southwark, the Walworth Academy, as well as some interesting historical buildings, such as St Mary Newington Church.

SE17 pays homage to its history with many of its locals businesses having a strong connection to the neighbourhood, with some of them being family owned for generations. As with many postcodes surrounding London, SE17 has experienced gentrification in some parts as property prices in the area have increased in recent years.
