It is well known for its scenic beauty and provides an array of outdoor activities, such as horse-riding, walking and bird-watching. The village has several shops, some of the oldest buildings in Lancashire and various historic sights.

In the L27 postcode, the locals enjoy an exceptional quality of life, with affluent suburban areas offering spacious, modern homes, as well as plenty of green open spaces and parks and other local attractions. It has a great selection of transport options, with a train station, a bus service, a ferry port and two airports in nearby areas.
