It covers the towns and villages of Blythburgh, Walberswick, Henham and Westleton, as well as the civil parishes of Bramfield and Westleton. This postcode area is bordered by IP12 and IP18 to the east and north respectively, and IP19 to the south.

Blythburgh is the largest settlement in IP17 and is home to numerous businesses, local traditional shops and attractions. It has a charming village green and fourteenth-century church, St. Mary's, which even featured in the Domesday Book.

Walberswick is a small village near Southwold which is renowned among locals for its unique and picturesque scenery. There are some lovely beaches and an array of wildlife to be seen in its meadows and marshes.

Henham is another small village in the IP17 postcode which dates back to the Norman period. It has a pretty church, a village hall and an 18th century pub, The Bell Inn.

Westleton is an ecclesiastical parish located a few miles away from the coast and includes the hamlets of Ubbeston Green and Gun Hill. Its main attraction is Westleton Crown, an ancient pub known for its thatched roof.

The Bramfield civil parish covers some of the centre and rural areas of IP17 and has a sizeable primary school. It also boasts two public houses, The Banqueting Hall and The Carpenter's Arms, as well as several historic buildings.

The Westleton civil parish covers the most rural parts of IP17 and has a range of cafés, pubs, shops and other businesses. The Westleton Church dates back to the seventeenth century, and there is also a Grade II listed folly building called The Gothic Tower.
