The area also has a large nature reserve, the Cromarty Firth Nature Reserve, and a number of sites of special scientific interest within the IV28 postcode area. The local hills, such as the Kildermorie hills, are popular destinations for walkers, while a number of smaller rivers such as the Alness River make the area perfect for anglers. There is also a coastal path along the firth, providing stunning views of the area.

The area is well served by a number of local amenities, including a number of shops and restaurants. Alness has a number of banks and other financial services, as well as a hospital. There is also a library, and several schools including high schools and primary schools in the area. There is also an active community centre, with a number of different activities and groups for people to get involved in.
