The area covers the easternmost part of the city and includes the villages of Fenton Barns, Macmerry, Ormiston and Tranent. The postcode district has a population of around 11,000 people.

The town of Tranent is the main centre, and is known for its old buildings and its family-friendly atmosphere. It also boasts a grade A listed ruin, Tranent Old Kirk, which dates back to the 14th century and overlooks the village from its hilltop position. The town is home to many shops, restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as a local museum and visitor centre.

The EH42 postcode district is predominantly rural, with fields, farms and forests making up most of the area. It's popular for a number of outdoor activities such as walking, cycling and horse riding, and the area is home to the historic John Muir Way walking and cycling route. There are also two golf courses and two country parks, providing plenty of natural beauty for visitors to take in.
