It is comprised of western parts of Musselburgh, Wallyford, Tranent and Elphinstone as well as all of Whitecraig. In terms of education, the postcode has two primary schools, Elphinstone Primary and Musselburgh Burgh Primary, plus secondary schools such as Musselburgh Grammar School and Preston Lodge High School.

Over the past few years, the number of new homes being built in the area around EH39 has been steadily increasing. From executive detached houses to apartment complexes, the area is becoming increasingly attractive to home buyers. This is due to its location, with easy access to the city centre, its plethora of local amenities such as shops, bars and restaurants, and strong transport connections.
