This postcode district covers the Old Town, part of the City centre of Edinburgh within its boundaries. The area is also home to iconic attractions such as the National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery.

EH2 is also home to a range of shops, restaurants and pubs, including several independent traders. Located close by is the University of Edinburgh's Potterrow campus along with the college of art and music.

EH2 is served by an extensive bus network, as well as several tram stops, running from the city centre to the airport. The Waverley railway station is just minutes away, providing convenient access to major cities such as Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness. There are also several car hire companies nearby.

The area is serviced by both the Scottish Ambulance Service and the Edinburgh City Police. There are two fire stations in the area which are managed by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

EH2 is within National Cycle Network routes, providing easy access to the nearby outskirts of the city, with footpaths and cycle paths also located in nearby parks. This postcode district is well served by the Edinburgh tram service, which connects EH1 and EH2.
