There are several golf courses and the Stranraer Golf Course, which is one of the oldest courses in the UK, and the Shiskine Golf and Tennis Club in Whithorn. The area also features a number of cycling routes, with routes taking you through some of the most remote parts of the region.

The local economy is largely based around farming and the thriving tourism industry, with attractions such as Drumlanrig Castle, the Silver Sands of Morar in Gigha, and the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse providing a range of activities to enjoy.

As well as its natural beauty, DG9 is well-connected and boasts transport links to the rest of the region. Regular bus and train services run between Stranraer and the nearby towns of Ayr, Dumfries and Carlisle, while ferry links can be found in the isolated areas such as Stranraer to the Irish cities of Belfast and Larne.
