In terms of transport, the district is well-served with the A75 Euroroute connecting the town with Ayr and Scotland's motorway network. The main railway services in the district are on the West Coast Main Line, heading and inland route to Glasgow Central in Scotland.

Education facilities in the DG8 district are provided by Scotland's further and higher education institutions, including the University of Glasgow, which can be found nearby. The area is served by the Dumfries and Galloway Council, who are responsible for providing local services, health, education, transport, and other services.

The district has a range of attractions, including Wigtown Regatta, the largest maritime festival in Scotland held annually. The town also hosts the Spring Fling Festival of Arts, featuring exhibitors from across the country to showcase their artwork. The area is also known for its sports clubs, including Stranraer FC, a professional football team competing in the Scottish Championship. Additionally, the town has a Crofting Museum and a four-mile section of the Southern Upland Way national trail.
