Dumfries is a small market town with a population of around 32,000 and is the county town of Dumfriesshire, located on the River Nith. The area is also known for its many historic landmarks such as the Old Bridge, the Whitesands, the Shambellie House and the Miller's Monument.

DG1 encompasses a variety of local outdoor activities, most notably walking and cycling in its numerous parks and woodlands. The area is known for its many hills as well as woodland trails and riverside walks.

DG1 also includes a number of shopping opportunities with a wide variety of shops and restaurants. These range from the high street stores, to independent stores and café bars, as well as the Crichton Shopping Village which hosts a large shopping centre in the form of an old Victorian mansion.

The area also plays host to a wide variety of cultural and educational activities with a number of museums, galleries and leisure facilities. These include the Robert Burns Centre, the Gracefield Arts Centre and the Monreith Animal World.

DG1 is served by a number of public transport networks, with regular bus services between the town and surrounding villages, and mainline trains connecting the area to Glasgow and other areas across Scotland. Additionally, the DG1 postcode includes a number of popular car parks within the town centre which make it easy to access local business and leisure facilities.
