The core village of the CO5 postcode district is East Mersea, with its picturesque harbour, beaches and attractions, but the area is home to a number of smaller villages and hamlets, such as Beaumont-cum-Moze, Tollesbury and Great Wigborough. It also includes the prosperous villages of Layer Marney and Abberton, with its population of around 1000 people.

The history of the area dates back centuries, and there are a number of interesting sites, from Layer Marney Tower, one of England's largest Tudor gatehouses to the Neolithic Seahenge on Mersea Island, one of the earliest post-glacial structures in Britain.
