It is served by Maryport train station, located just 6 miles away, and Carlisle is a twenty-minute drive away.

The area's economy is based on agriculture and tourism. The main Tourist Information Centre in the CA13 postcode area is located in the village of Waverton. It provides information on the local area and its attractions, including local fells and lakes. Several local businesses including a pub, coffee shop, creamery and a number of B&Bs can also be found in the area.

The area's vibrant youth culture is fostered through the presence of several volunteer-led youth organisations. These include the CA13 Youth Project, Team CA13, BECOMIN' and Wampool Young Farmers' Club.
