Recreationally, the area is well-served with a variety of activities. Ton Pentre FC, a Welsh football club founded in 1889 through to 2013, was based in the area. For the naturalist, there are extensive woodland and parks on the outskirts of CF39.

Economically, the area is served by banks, post offices and local shops alongside a twice-weekly market that takes over the main street in the area. Additionally, Treorchy High Street has recently improved its economic status after the £750,000 revamp of the main street was completed in 2016.

The area is also well connected by public transport network with local bus routes, train station and parking. The nearest train station to CF39 is Treorchy, with regular services to Cardiff Central. Additionally, ferndale railway station is also in the postcode, linking to Cardiff, Bridgend and Neath.

For medical services, Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Royal Glamorgan Hoslpital in Llantrisant, Neath Port Talbot Hospital and The Rhondda Group Practice are all nearby.

In terms of health, £7.7 million has recently been invested in creating a new health centre in Ferndale that will include a range of medical, complementary and mental health services. This will also include volunteer groups and services.
