It is primarily a residential area and includes the settlements of Blackpool, Cleveleys, Fleetwood, Thornton, Lytham St Annes, and Poulton-le-Fylde.

It is bordered by the FY1 and FY5 postcode districts in the west and east respectively, along with the LA1 postcode district in the south. The FY2 and FY7 postcode districts are to the north.

The area is served by the A585 road, which runs along the length of the Fylde coast and links the settlements of Blackpool, Lytham St Annes, and Fleetwood. It is also served by several bus and tram routes, including the Blackpool Tramway, making it a convenient area for commuters.

The area has a scenic coastline with several popular tourist attractions, such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which is the UK's biggest theme park, and Blackpool Tower, the world's tallest freestanding tower, offering panoramic views of the Irish sea and the Lake District. It is also home to the Blackpool Illuminations, an annual event which takes place along the Fylde coast.

The FY3 postcode district is located close to several areas of outstanding natural beauty, such as Cleveleys Dykes, the Wildflower Fairhaven Woodland and Martin Mere Wetland Centre, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities.

It also has a vibrant nightlife with several pubs, clubs, and bars along the Fylde coast, as well as a wide selection of hotels, guesthouses, and other accommodation options.

The area is home to a number of sports teams, including Blackpool F.C., who play in the English Football League, and Blackpool FC Ladies, who play in the Women's Northern Premier League.

In terms of education, FY3 is served by a number of primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities, such as Blackpool and Fylde College, University of Central Lancashire, and St Annes International College.
