It is bordered by the B94 postcode district in the north, the B97 postcode district in the east, the B98 postcode district in the south-east, and the B76 postcode district in the south. The area itself contains the villages of Marlbrook, South Redditch, Hunt End, Woodrow and Winyates Green.

The B96 postcode was introduced in the mid-1970s alongside the B94 to B98 postcodes. All postcode districts are a part of Worcestershire County Council and Redditch Borough Council, which includes a large part of Worcestershire.

The area of B96 is served by two railway stations, Bromsgrove station and Barnt Green station. It is also served by numerous bus routes.

Local points of interest include Winyates Green Conservation Area, Lickey Hills Country Park and the Bromsgrove canal. There are also recreational activities such as bowling, golfing, angling, boating and walking available in the area.

Residents of B96 have access to a range of shops, services, restaurants and pubs. Notable shopping spots include the Park Street shopping centre, Ride End Industrial Estate, the Weaver's Wharf Shopping Centre and the Bromsgrove Retail Park. The Market Hall plays host to regular markets and the area is home to many pubs and restaurants.

Education in the area is provided by Redditch Borough Council and the Park Street Academy Trust. Schools in the area include The Denes Primary School, Church Hill Middle School and Lodge Park Academy.
