The district is largely residential and predominantly two-storey, terraced housing, many of which were built during the 19th and 20th centuries. Industry in the area includes car parts manufacturing, repair and service businesses, fine engine manufacturing and electronic component factories.

Public transportation is provided by the metro rail, which serves both Bearwood and Smethwick stations. Bus services offer a connection to more local destinations, while the Birmingham-Wolverhampton railway provides journeys to other cities.
