It is located north of Belfast, east of Bangor, and south of Newtownards, right by the Irish Sea. The postcode area contains the small towns Bangor, Newtownards and Donaghadee. It is also home to numerous smaller villages and hamlets such as Ballyhalbert, Ballywalter, Carrowdore, Kircubbin, Greyabbey, Millisle and Portaferry.

Recreationally, there are many features and attractions for visitors or residents to enjoy in the area. These include the The A21 Causeway Coast Way, a walking route through the BT52 postcode that connects the Giant's Causeway to Belfast; the historic seafront promenade in Bangor; the Donaghadee Lighthouse, built in 1836; as well as Telford's Castle, a ruin of a Norman castle. There are also plenty of harbours, beaches and scenery to admire, and lots of watersports opportunities.

For shopping and dining, the postcode has plenty of options. Bangor, with its numerous pubs, cafes, restaurants and boutiques, is the hub of dining in the postcode. Newtownards also offers a wide range of places to eat and drink, as well as a handful of shops. Donaghadee has fewer eateries, but a number of interesting shops.

Educationally, the postcode is home to Bangor Grammar School, Ashfield Girls High School, Newtownards High school and Regent House School among others.
